Airport Arconas W-Series

Billings Jackson Studio, in a collaborative effort with manufacturer Arconas, designed a new iteration of innovative waste management called the W-Series Liquid Disposal System. The system solves collection and disposal issues surrounding non-compliant liquids in the security area for passengers and custodians alike. Its technology builds from the sophisticated and unique system design that San Francisco International Airport (SFO) pioneered.
Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR) approached Billings Jackson to determine the feasibility of developing a liquid collection system, standardizing one similar to SFO’s concept. At the same time, Arconas approached our firm and asked us to design a water disposal system for them to manufacture. Out of this approach and collaboration emerged the W-Series. While it was originally developed for the aviation industry, its modularity enables it to adapt to meet the needs of other industry organizations.
The W-Series is a one-stop-drop location for passengers to dispose of any trash or non-compliant liquids before reaching the security screening area. The bin features dedicated compartments for liquids, bottles and waste. Its exterior design reminds passengers about any solid and liquid waste they may still be carrying through clearly marked visuals on all sides of the bin. The bins are portable and can be relocated to any area of the security area, depending on TSA and airport preferences or as high-traffic demand requires.
Various spillproof features including a stainless-steel strainer on the top of the bin prevents liquid splashing as passengers empty containers. Passengers can pour their liquids into an antimicrobial tank fitted with lockable castors. Once full, maintenance can affix its tight-fitting lid and roll the 20-gallon tank away to empty in a designated area via a quick draining pump – all without any lifting. The tank’s small size combined with its mobility features makes it easier for maintenance staff to transport liquid waste to a disposal site and reduces any chances of tipping and spilling.
